Unheralded in high school, he worked as a census taker and in the Ford Motor Company plant before briefly attending Bradley University, where he was named to the first-team, All-Missouri Valley Conference during his freshman year. Puckett was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in one of the city's worst ghettos. Puckett was known for the unbridled enthusiasm with which he played the game, and for his determination in getting the most from his physical abilities. After being forced to retire at age 35 due to loss of vision in one eye from glaucoma, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year of eligibility. He was the first baseball player during the twentieth century to record 1,000 hits in his first five full calendar years in Major League Baseball (since joined by Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki), and one of only two to record 2,000 hits during his first ten full calendar years. 318 career batting average was the highest by any right-handed American League batter in the second half of the twentieth century. He is the Twins franchise's all-time leader (1961-present) in career hits, runs scored, extra base hits, and total bases. His gregarious personality and dynamic style of play endeared him to fellow players and fans alike.

Benson was a member of the Izaak Walton League of America and a director of the Wildlife Management Institute. He dedicated himself to the aims of the Sport Fishing Institute in efforts to fight pollution and promote fish conservation and fishing areas. Mr. Benson also served as president of the Sport Fishing Institute during the first 10 years of its existence from 1949-59. Benson served as president of the AFTMA and devoted himself to the promotion and growth of the industry and the sport of fishing. Mr. Benson was instrumental in joining the Eastern and Western Tackle Associations into the AFTMA in 1932.įrom 1936 through 1953, Mr. Mildrum Jewel Company, now the Mildrum Manufacturing Company, of East Berlin, Connecticut. Mr. Benson entered the fishing tackle industry in 1920 when he founded the W.W. Long dedicated to the cause of fish conservation and to the growth of sport fishing, Mr. BENSON (Deceased) is a pioneer figure in the fishing tackle industry and was instrumental in founding the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association (AFTMA) and the Sport Fishing Institute.
